I watched the first few episodes of that Upotte show that DashingRainbow and KimmyJ recommended and it's.... interesting....
I liked FLCL and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Loved them both. FLCL is a little strange but makes sense once you understand, it's pretty straight foward. I love that show so much. Pretty funny, too.
Then there's NGE. WOAH BOY, good fucking luck understanding it fully without Google. It helps if you don't watch at 2-5am like I did, though. But I still loved the fuck outta that show even if Shinji was a whiney bitch and Asuka was nearly totally unlikable.
They were both made by Gainax, and so was that Panty and Stocking show so that I guess.
I've heard only good things about Cowboy Bebop, I plan on watching it after the NGE Rebuild, but until then I can't exactly recommend it.
When I was a kid I loved Shaman King, and the intro makes me jizz out my ears with the force of a thousand suns. So that.
I liked the manga of Full Metal Alchemist and G.Gray Man so I assume that the animes are good too.
Also Bleach, because tits and blood and that's pretty much it.

@Jakalarf: Absolutely worth it. Just make sure it has the english dub, it makes a world of difference in the delivery and atmosphere.

cant believe no one said it but one piece is really awesome its almost at 700 in manga and is in the 580s in the anime. the newer episodes aren't english dub but it doesn't matter it doesn't affect the outcome.

Gonna basically repost what I posted last time.
It depends on what you're looking for in your next show.
Hellsing Ultimate and Highschool of the Dead are really great visually, but aren't extremely deep in terms of story.
FLCL (Fooly Cooly) is really nice, considering it's only 6 episodes. It's pretty crazy and action-filled. It's also just good-looking, being a Gainax anime.
Elfen Lied is also violent like Hellsing: Ultimate or HOTD, but it's also pretty emotional. It's only 13 episodes, so it's short.
Generally solid ones I'd recommend to anyone are Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop, if you haven't seen them yet.
Lucky Star is a lighthearted sitcom-esque show. It's also kawaii as fuck
My personal favourite is Clannad, so I recommend that for people who want something deep and aren't against watching a romance anime.

Baccano! It is a hell of an anime, great story and A LOT of action. One of the best recent animes to come out.

Baka to Test without a doubt. I just watched it a few months ago and i loved it. It's a comedy, not really a lot of action, but the characters are really relatable and the way they interact with each other is just amazing.
