Why I Can't Get Into Gurren Lagann

Miser_Reborn

CHAT Image
Let me preface this by saying that everything I'm about to say is based on the first season of the show. I'm aware that the second half is totally different. Also, spoilers.

I guess I can understand why people would, hypothetically, like Gurren Lagann. The fact that people like the whole gigantic-robots-beating-the-shit-out-of-each-other genre proves this, but I've been squarely predisposed against it since my childhood because of... well... how to put this delicately...

THOSE FAGGOT POWER RANGERS AND THEIR STUPID CHARACTERS AND STUPID EFFECTS AND STUPID CHILDHOOD-RUINING MORALS.

Doesn't help that the week I had satellite, Nicktoons opted to play some version of Power Rangers over Korra. So, as someone with a grudge against the entire genre which this show is a part of, let me do my best to bullshit my way through other reasons why I dislike it.

First off, for a mech show, there are decidedly few actions scenes. I guess you could argue that the show's about the characters or the story or some shit like that, but (1.) it's not, and (2.) neither of those are very good legs to stand on anyway. The allure of this type of show is watching giant robots beat the shit out of each other, and I suppose this is the part where I should whip out the obvious easily-accessible comparison.

In Pacific Rim, barely any time is spent on the characters, or the story, or whatever other bullshit that bogs down this kind of movie. Hell, I'd argue that, with the exception of Little Miss Kawaii's backstory, any time spent on those would be wasted and pointless, and too much is left in the movie. So, by comparison, Gurren Lagann's action scenes are relatively few, far between, and comparatively boring. They're pretty bare-bones. I think the only time I remember getting into the action was in Episode 2 or 3, when they do this zany maneuver where the Optimus Prime head gets used as a Liam-erang through a cliff.

So, okay. Let's assume that it goes for the character, story, lore-oriented nonsense. (It doesn't.) This would be fine... if any of those things were good. As I haven't actually finished the show (lost interest, sorry; for explanation, see above and below), I might not be in the best position to say this, but I hate pretty much every character other than Kamina, Rossiu, and Nia. Even Kamina got on my nerves until he got a HELL of a lot of character development... oh, and then he FUCKING DIED right after. Before then, he just came off as a brash retard whose messages were drawn out by him failing miserably and endangering himself and others, and now that I think about it, the themes of the show ULTIMATELY SCREW HIM OVER, THEREFORE NEGATING ITS MESSAGE.

So far, my favourite episode of the show was probably the one that introduces Rossiu. It had an actually interesting story, unlike whatever nonsense was going on at the surface, and introduced the first character to ACTUALLY ACT RATIONALLY. I guess Rossiu's kind of flat, but at least he has fully functional brain hemispheres. Oh, and Nia's funny.

Let's just do a quick run-down before you and I get equally bored of this shit. Simon goes from being a whiny brat to being a depressed emo whiny brat, Yoko's entire personality is literally "girl," (Stay classy, Trigger), Steven Blum (that's seriously all I know him by) is funny, but makes me feel dirty and offensive, the little scamps that join up in the Rossiu episode are annoying as all shit, and the Black siblings are pointless and have absolutely no reason to be in the show.

We g? We g. There's a few other side characters, but I don't really like any of them as much as I do Kamina or Nia, so they can all rot in an elaborate underground mining village hundreds of years into the future for all I care. I can't get into the show because I can't get into the characters or the actions, so on the whole I'm pretty indifferent to it. All in all I'd give the show (at least the first arc) a FUCK YOU POWER RANGERS out of seven.

inb4 "BUT YOU CAN'T JUDGE IT BEFORE YOU FINISH THE SHOW"
inb4 "SERIOUSLY THE SECOND ARC IS SO MUCH BETTER"
inb4 shit getting flipped because I said I didn't really like something as much as everyone else
inb4 people saying the inb4 after the inb4 and absolute hysterics break out among the crowd therefore destabilizing the global economy

if you don't like it that's your valid opinion i had no idea what the show was going to be about as i saw it way before i got involved with chat i just thought it was interesting yea some parts got me teary eyed and some i thought was just fucking dumb but i felt as a story there was purpose with a driving force, and with the death of kimina it's not really a show about him it's about semon who needs his best friend to die so he can grow as a person. now i really don't like death as a plot device in anime but if you think about it death is a motivator in real life

in conclusion like what you like and don't like what you don't like i won't laugh at you if we disagree

Perhaps people like fun. I know, it's a very strange concept, but seems to be the answer for most similar queries.

Yeah you got your points there and it is YOUR opinion so I'll respect it. The show has its faults buts it actually is pretty good all together. (overhyped yes but still good)
Simon's character development takes a while but he finally stops being a little bitch after a while. Gimi and Darry have bigger roles later in the second season and Rossiu isn't as flat later on also. As for the Black Siblings I am guessing you mean Kittan and his sisters- which yeah they are pointless besides giving a bit more story to a few characters in season 2. Also, Viral was pretty badass later on, after everyone was done kicking his ass.

But Kamina.

I don't like TTGL either.
I think I liked Kamina more, but he was one of the only good parts of the show. Rossiu becomes an unlovable asshole and Yoko is pretty awesome for like... 3 episodes later on. Then she becomes boobs.

Replying to OP: These are rational opinions but I like that the show is one giant hype train that only slows down to let Nia on. And while you can complain that the Black siblings are useless in the first arc, I say that they are the counter human element from Rossiu. That meaning that they want to fight against oppression but lack Gunmen while doing. The second arc is almost an entirely different show and I prefer the first one. It could be that it just isn't your kind of show and you may prefer it to be all fights or a great story, but in my opinion it finds the best possible line in between the two (before Kill la Kill). But yeah Gimi and Darry in the first arc are irritating as hell.
TLDR; I like the show and it seems to me that you wanted a more story/human element based show. I recommend you watch SnK/AoT.

ReservoirDog

Gurren Lagann is OVERRATED.

@ReservoirDog: (Knowing the shit I will get for this) Cowboy Bebop is over rated.

And also since I just found this I feel like this is relevant.

Good story, with over the top characters, and over the top action scenes (sorry you missed all the biggest ones but that's your own fault), what more could you ask for?

Neal

@GarrettRainboom: A female protagonist.

I think people are misunderstanding that I did get that people like this "fun" thing, whatever it is. I just wasn't having that "fun" thing, whatever it is, in the action scenes. I found them really boring. A show can be fantastic and be all about this abstract concept bullshit, look at Kill Dies for a perfect example.

I got 6 episodes in and had to stop. I kinda see the appeal of it, but its just not my kind of show I guess.

Also, if you badmouth Power Rangers ever again I'll slap you. I swear, you never bad mouth that piece of television perfection ever, ever again! (Except the later series, rip on them as much as you want, I don't care)
