I'm glad I managed to get pointing out that this game is a blatant Mario Kart rip-off in the title, because literally every sane reviewer talking about this has and should mention this. And at the risk of sounding even more cliche, it's also important to mention that this is a very good Mario Kart rip-off.
I'm not actually sure anyone likes Sega anymore. There's no way in hell they're gaining new fans, considering the closest they've done to making a smart decision in the part 3 years was re-releasing old games of theirs. I once gushed over Sonic Generations, but looking back it's not nearly as good as I remembered it as being. Their copyright policies are bullshit, they let Platinum out of their grasp (remeber what happened to the last company that did that), and in general they aren't making or publishing many very good games. They're also neglecting to release new installments of pretty much every franchise they have except Sonic or House of the Dead.
Okay, we can sit here and bash on Sega all day. The point I'm going to eventually get to is that Sega's shittiness is depressing considering that they used to be quite good. It's around the time the Dreamcast died that Sega followed suit. Depending on who you ask, it might've been even earlier than that. This is especially saddening considering they had a few legitimately promising franchises under their belt that withered as they did. I mean, say what you will about Sonic, but it's a series that has some potential, and there are other, more obscure franchises of theirs that hold a soft spot in my heart, for instance, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Ristar, Vectorman, etc. It's pretty much entirely because I'm a raging Genesis fanboy, but I think it's fair to say Sega had some decent IPs.
So I guess Sega's thinking when making this game was that it worked out last time they stole Nintendo's much more successful business model. This lead Sega to scraping together what few franchises they owned and hadn't completely aborted (See: Vectorman, Phantasy Star, Shining Force) and throwing them into a Mario Kart game. As a fan of the older Sega, I quite like seeing some of these stages and characters included. Among the franchises represented are Panzer Dragoon, Shinobi, not Yakuza, Crazy Taxi, not Ristar, Space Channel 5, not Ristar, Golden Axe, NOT FUCKING RISTAR, Super Monkey Ball, and...
What.
WHAT.
WHY.
WHO.
HOW?!?
FUCKING WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK.
WHO WOULD EVEN?!
To surmise, Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed gets an 8.5 out of 10. I definitely recommend it.
