For this thread, just post some useless facts that will never help you in real life, but may win you a beer at your bar's trivia games.

Magnets attract metal but they also repel organic material (much weaker though, hardly noticeable)

In Jurassic Park, the sound of the velociraptors communicating was actually a recording of mating tortoises.

Why'd they change it, I can't say.
I guess people just liked it better that way.

I got the lyrics a little wrong, actually.

Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way"

"It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs."
This actually makes sense. The Kessel Run is a route from the Kessel that smugglers had to traverse to smuggle out cargo from Kessel's Spice Mines. In the middle of the route was "The Maw", a cluster of asteroids and black holes. Most pilots would avoid The Maw and much of "The Pit" (a sparser asteroid field). This made the journey longer, but Han claims to have a good enough ship that he went very close to the Maw, making the journey only 12 parsecs.
Even with this said, it was meant to be obvious that Solo was lying about the ship.

Did you know that the Velociraptors shown in Jurassic Park were actually a different dinosaur called the "Deinonychus".
Not only this, but it has since been proven that both the velociraptor and deinonychus were feathered and resembled modern birds, not reptiles.

Technically, you can step in the same river twice. The stable thing about nature is landmarks such as rivers. One could easily step into the same river twice, the only difference would be the water.

The exact origins of the phrase "the whole 9 yards" are unknown.
sonny88p
@Carlsbean:many possible origins though
This is the origin from the 1900's (one of the earliest believable origins):
it's related to the British phrase "dressed to the nines"
It takes exactly nine square yards of material to create a man's three-piece suit.

The juice from unripe pineapples can cause severe vomiting. Bromelain ingestion is associated with a low incidence of adverse reactions, including diarrhea, excess menstrual flow, nausea, skin rash, and vomiting. Swelling of the mouth and cheeks can result from eating large amounts of the fruit.

@sonny88p: One of the most commonly suggested ones, although not the most likely one, is that it relates to WWII fighter planes. The "whole 9 yards" apparently related to firing the entire belt of ammunition. This is not very likely, as 9 yards was not a common regulation amount of ammo for a lot of WWII fighter planes, (obviously different planes had different regulatory amounts,) and the amount of ammunition was almost always stated by the actual number of rounds, not by how long they all added up to be on the belt.

Time is a measurement of the earth's rotation. Time is used as a variable in certain equations, and is as real as velocity. Just because it isn't palpable doesn't mean it's not real.

Thomas Edison, who did not support capital punishment, hired people to invent the electric chair to show the dangers of Nicola Tesla's (actually safer) AC current.
He also bought children's pets and killed them with the AC current to show it was dangerous, even though his DC current was more dangerous.

@deadshadow:it depends on how you define flying
you could define it as flapping your arms to raise yourself from the ground, if so you could swim in water starting from the bottom and that would be "flying"
